Be Your Own Hero

Firstly, I am not too sure if there is an actual source on just “Be your own hero.” It tends to pop up as part of a larger quote, but I think that these simple four  words boil it all down just fine.

Whether they are fictional, larger than life personas in capes or somebody you know and hold in high esteem, it is entirely critical to have heroes in life.

With that being said, when was the last time that you held yourself in that same light?  When things are at their worst, there likely won’t be somebody to swing in and save the day.  Nothing will come of sitting around and waiting for a savior other than extended discomfort. It is up to us to find something within ourselves to stand strong and take control of our lives.  Sometimes this can be in the form of a great accomplishment: a promotion at work, new PR in the gym, taking the next step with a lover.  Sometimes, it is simply having the strength to force your eyes open when the alarm goes off and start the day.  Not every day in the life of our heroes was a cakewalk, so we cannot expect our paths to be one either.

It is our responsibility to ourselves as humans to see ourselves as the hero emerging out of the chaos, darkness, or whatever challenge has presented itself.  With bright lights shining behind us, we face the challenges of life head on.  We have to remember that despite the absolute worst circumstances, our heroes remain standing.

So, shall we.

We must have faith in the fact that once we get through the hardships and hurt we will PROSPER and shine brighter than we had before.  We will draw strength from the lessons learned through the hard times, achieve wisdom through pain, and rejoice in our newfound times of peace and clarity.

We need to model our inner heroes after our outer heroes.  So much of our life is impacted by our environment.  By establishing a strong belief in our inner hero, we establish the groundwork for building a strong environment for yourself wherever you are.  This environment is important.  Being your own hero does not mean refusing help from others, and it is crucial you fill your environment with others who believe in the same things that fuel you.

When things seem to be at their worst, remember.  Your inner hero is not some distant fantasy.  It is the human spirit within yourself that is ready and willing to fight for you.  To stand up when the world is heavy.  To believe that there is always something worth saving.

Before you realize it, the person you are saving is yourself.
